The GRAND: Then & Now

presented by
The GRAND & The Calgary Association of Life Long Learners

The GRAND has helped shape our City’s arts and cultural landscape over the last 111 years, seeing Calgarians through two World Wars, The Great Depression, a fire in 2004, the 2013 Calgary Flood, and two global pandemics. In 2025 Calgary will celebrate its 150th birthday. Dr. Donald B. Smith, professor emeritus of Canadian history at the University of Calgary and author of "Calgary's GRAND Story'' , with Marcel Hebert of the Southern Alberta Pioneers, recall with historic slides the city’s early history, from the vantage point of Western Canada's oldest theatre, The GRAND, which was erected in 1912.

Attendees will also hear from The GRAND's Executive Director Erynn Lyster and Neil Fleming, Executive Director of our resident company Making Treaty 7, to learn more about how The GRAND serves Calgary today.

Post presentation will feature Q&A and lobby reception. A historical walking tour of the building will be available for those who wish to see behind the scenes.

Don't miss out on this opportunity to learn all about your city's history, art, and culture from the past 100 years as we look forward to the next 100 years and beyond.

For patrons who RSVP for the walking tour please be advised:

The venue includes several staircases, and an elevator. The majority of the venue is wheelchair accessible. If you have other accessibility requirements, please email The GRAND at boxoffice@thegrandyyc.ca in advance so we may accommodate you!
