Community Engagement
at The GRAND
Thank you for your interest in The GRAND’s Community Engagement Process for 2022.
This page will provide you with everything you need to participate in our process.
We invite you to join the conversation!
Please check back regularly for updates.
Our Mission
The GRAND’s current mission is to be a Culture House presenting high quality, thought-provoking art, and creating diverse and inclusive experiences, while bringing together artists and audiences. To invoke new ways of thinking, appreciating, and being.
Our Need
To be successful, The GRAND needs an artistic vision that is relevant to our community and financially sustainable so that we can build a future, with and for, the community we serve.
Our Path
This fall, our board will do long term planning pertaining to The GRAND’s artistic vision, business model, and operational structure.
Our Invitation
We invite your participation while we explore where we have been, the impact we have had, and how we can meaningfully contribute to Calgary’s cultural future. We know that it is vital we get this right, and to do so, we need the help of our community.
Please engage with us, tell us your stories, write us letters, share your experiences. Help us as we forge a pathway to the future.
To learn more about how to get involved, see below.

Our Goals
To Listen
to how The GRAND has worked with Calgary’s creative community in the past.
To Understand
the outcomes of that work, both good and bad.
To Learn
from our long history, so that it might inform us as we build a brilliant, sustainable future for The GRAND.
The Community Engagement Process
We are surrounding ourselves with expertise in strategic planning, arts management, and business planning.
We are inviting everyone who wishes to participate to join the conversation.
We are gathering as much information as we can pertaining to The GRAND’s history and impact.
We welcome your stories – the highs, the lows, the accolades, the controversies.
Many voices need to be heard before we can find our way forward.
We will be conducting our community engagement from a variety of platforms.

The initial discovery phase is our foundation, designed to be built upon – it is by no means the end of our desire to learn.
We hope the variety of options provided will include everyone’s communications preference, but if not, let us know how we can best work with you.
The Bigger Plan
-
First, we are working with a varied team of experienced consultants from many locations and industries to assess our organizational capacity and financial viability.
In other words - we are getting our house in order.
-
As part of the process we will establish a strategic Community Advisory Committee tasked to advise the staff and board throughout this process, all of which is rooted in the feedback generated from the Community Engagement process, as well as guide strategic planning decisions with the board. More detail to come via newsletter and web updates.
We are opening our doors and inviting artists and the community at large into the space.
-
Once our listening and learning process is completed we will engage in a strategic planning exercise to determine The GRAND’s future.
We are making a viable plan for the future of The GRAND.
JOIN THE CONVERSATION
With full humility, open minds, and a deep desire to understand, we invite you to become part of our community engagement process. Please join the conversation.

Next Steps
If you share your information with us, we will inform you of engagement activities via electronic newsletter and this page, so that listening, understanding and learning can begin.
Our Shared Future
Our intention is to equip our board to make the best decisions possible to ensure a sustainable future while honouring our history and the community that we serve.
The board will consider all input from the Community Engagement Process in strategic planning. Further, we will establish a Strategic Community Advisory Committee to assist the board in decision making for The GRAND’s future.
Our Commitment
We will …
ensure transparency throughout the process;
stay nimble and adapt as we learn;
share all of the information necessary, to allow you to participate in the conversation to the extent you desire;
foster an inclusive and welcoming environment;
consider input and recommendations at the board level during strategic planning activities;
remain genuinely curious throughout the process;
extend sincere gratitude to all participants.

“We are committed to making this space available to as many arts organizations as possible, not only to serve our community and live up to our mission, but because we believe that is what's best for Calgary. We are eager to pack this house with powerful activations from a broad range of perspectives.”
