Ron Sexsmith is a three-time Juno Award–winning singer-songwriter from St. Catharines, Ontario. Born in 1964, he was inspired early on by Buddy Holly, Elton John, and his mother’s record collection. He began writing songs in his teens and found his voice as a songwriter at age 21, after becoming a father.
In 1987, Ron moved to Toronto to pursue music, working by day and performing in clubs at night. He released his first full-length album Grand Opera Lane in 1991, which eventually led to a publishing deal in Los Angeles and a recording contract with Interscope. His 1995 self-titled debut, produced by Mitchell Froom, earned critical acclaim, thanks in part to praise from Elvis Costello, and was hailed by Rolling Stone as the work of “the most fluent balladeer to come along since Tim Hardin or Harry Nilsson.”
Known for his heartfelt, timeless songwriting, Ron has released a steady stream of albums and worked with producers like Daniel Lanois, Steve Earle, and Bob Rock. His songs have been covered by Rod Stewart, Feist, Emmylou Harris, and Stevie Nicks, among others, and he has performed at venues like Massey Hall, Royal Albert Hall, and Carnegie Hall.
In 2017, he published his first novel, Deer Life: A Fairy Tale, and composed an accompanying musical score. In 2025, he will make his theatrical composer debut with the Stratford Festival’s As You Like It.
Ron lives in Perth County, Ontario, with his wife and continues to write, record, and perform around the world.
