Job Summary:
The Head of Stage at The GRAND is a vital member of the technical production team, responsible for leading all stage operations across the Flanagan Theatre and Studio. Reporting directly to the Technical Director, this position oversees the planning, installation, maintenance, and safe operation of stage systems and rigging equipment.
Operating in a dynamic and unionized environment, the Head of Stage ensures excellence in execution for a wide range of performances—from touring productions to community-driven events. This role combines hands-on technical leadership with a commitment to collaboration, safety, and innovation. The ideal candidate demonstrates both practical expertise and an ability to supervise and inspire crews, helping to deliver exceptional production experiences.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
JOB DESCRIPTION/ DUTIES
The Head of Stage oversees the safe and appropriate operation of all technical elements relating to live performances in The Grand’s Flanagan Theatre and Studio. Reporting to the Technical Director, the Head of Stages duties include but are not limited to:
Coordination of all stage department activities
Operation of rigging systems and related equipment as directed for performances
Maintaining a safe working environment at all times by conforming to all established safety policies and procedures
Maintaining a comprehensive inventory of all equipment in the stage department
Ensuring that stage masking/travellers are set up properly and safely
Supervision of of casual technicians to ensure efficiency and accuracy
Overseeing the cleanliness of the stage and backstage areas
Ensuring meticulously laid Marley dance floors for house and touring companies
Assisting with the rigging and focusing of projectors and screens
Assisting with the maintenance of all technical equipment
Carrying out all other tasks requested by the TD
Reporting all accidents/incidents immediately to the TD and Operations Manager
Abiding by all company rules and bylaws as detailed in Human Resources policies
Ensuring that internal communications are as efficient as possible and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the technical team
Attending and participating in technical team meetings and Health and Safety Committee as the Fire Warden
Cross departmental work is expected where appropriate
Completing and submitting Show Reports
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
A minimum of two years’ experience in theatre or audio visual productions
Working knowledge of video, audio, and playback programs (Qlab, PowerPoint)
Experience with hanging/focusing lighting fixtures is an asset
Knowledge of chain motors, load limits, and ability to read a load table
Good general understanding of all technical aspects of theatre and live shows
Basic knowledge of Google Drive, Excel, and Microsoft Word
Standard First Aid with CPR, WHMIS, and Fall Protection will be required training and attainment for the successful candidate, paid by the employer

Ability to work autonomously as well as within a team environment.
Diplomatic written and verbal communication skills
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Technicians at The Grand work under a collective agreement with Local 212 of IATSE (International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees). The Head of Stage, if not already a member in good standing, will join Local 212 after a probationary period.
Remuneration includes benefits and RRSP. The hours for this position are dependent on the needs of rentals and maintenance requirements. The Grand Theatre guarantees 24 hours minimum pay from September to end of June, with additional maintenance hours available over the summer.
