About Us

The historic GRAND theatre has spanned over a century as a hub for Calgary’s art, culture and political communities. Built in 1912, The Lougheed block has seen the city’s landscape evolve and we are proud to call this iconic structure our home.

The GRAND’s mission is to provide a space for artists to create, think and dream. We welcome companies, collectives and individuals to come together and learn from one another, building shared meaning and culture for our city.

The GRAND is situated on the land where the Bow River meets the Elbow River. The traditional Blackfoot name of this place is Mohkinstsis, which is also referred to as the City of Calgary. We honour and acknowledge Mohkinstsis and the traditional Treaty 7 territory and oral practices of the Blackfoot confederacy: Siksika, Kainai, Piikani as well as the Iyarhe Nakoda and Tsuut’ina nations who also call this place home.  We also acknowledge that this territory is home to the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region 3 within the historical Northwest Métis homeland.

The GRAND is a not-for-profit organization (Charitable Registration: 134483981 RR0001). Since 2006, the theatre has been a centre for creation and presentation of contemporary performance from Calgary, Canada, and around the world. In 2019, we embark on a new chapter with a new vision for the future.

Today, the GRAND theatre houses a variety of event spaces perfect for a unique wedding, private event, corporate party or presentation, as well as arts, culture, performance and theatre events. With four distinct spaces to choose from, studios, dressing rooms and, of course, the versatile theatre are available to rent for a variety of purposes and events.

The Grand announces Black Radish Theatre and Making Treaty 7 Cultural Society as our inaugural resident companies.

We are honoured and delighted to be taking our first steps in giving back The GRAND to the community as a Culture House for the Arts by welcoming Black Radish Theatre and Making Treaty 7 Cultural Society to our building as their home. These two incredible theatre companies are a true reflection of the cultural rainbow that is The Grand and our mission to embrace all Albertans.

The oldest standing theatre in Calgary, The Sherman Grand Theatre, as it was known, was the focal point of the local theatre scene from its opening in 1912 at the peak of the first boom years in Alberta to 1937 when it was converted to a movie house. It served as a roadhouse offering international stars and touring companies as well as a venue for concerts and productions by local artists. Over the last century, The GRAND Theatre has been a hub for arts, theatre, cultural and political life in Calgary.
