A Paper Covered World

What inspires local artists? What are their secret indulgences? These are just two of the questions we asked Kyra and Quinn, who will be kicking off our new program NEXT STAGE, with an incredible dance piece in the Studio.

Describe your Performance

We are using dance as a medium to explore social topics, which is new for us.  In the past, we’ve primarily focused on movement creation rather than storytelling or sending a message.  Though we are still keeping the piece light and quirky and true to ourselves. We are using a series of boxes and paper to explore how our environment shapes us and encourages us to conform, which can ultimately lead to the demise of our creative selves (if we let it). We incorporate these elements into our movement as well as using them as set pieces to invite the audience into our paper covered world.  This theme manifested itself throughout the creation process; it wasn’t our original intent to create a piece about this. With all this being said it’s important to us for the movement of the piece to be in the forefront as we work to discover our creative voices as emerging artists.

What inspired you to be an artist?

Kyra: Life inspired me to be an artist haha… I never had a moment that pushed me into the direction of crafting movement or pieces of art. Creating art has always been present in my life from when I was a child and it has developed more over the years.

Quinn: It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what it was. I used to make up dances in my living room with my friends when I was a kid and it quickly became a passion of mine. But I was never one of those people that technique or choreography came naturally too, I always had to work hard at it.  I’ve considered giving up dance so many times, but I can’t imagine where I would be if dance wasn’t a part of my life.  It’s just the perfect outlet to satisfy my need for both physicality and creativity.

What’s your favourite thing about Calgary?

Kyra: I love spending time by the Bow River, I enjoy sitting nearby and listening to the water. I find it very soothing to be in the presence of the flow of water.

Quinn: I’m a born and raised Calgarian and have lived in the Hillhurst-Sunnyside area basically my entire life.  To say I’m attached would be an understatement.  Kensington is my hood and gives me the feeling of home.

What’s your favourite song?

Kyra: My favourite song right now is probably Get Up Off That Thing by James Brown….it helps me shake it out when I’m stressing.

Quinn: My all time favourite song is Bobcaygeon by The Tragically Hip.  It reminds me of my family.

What’s your secret indulgence?

Kyra: A spoonful of peanut butter with several chocolate chips on top.

Quinn: Cuddling with my cats and watching Netflix…though maybe that’s not much of a secret. Oh and coffee…. lots of coffee.

You can catch Kyra & Quinn in the Studio at the GRAND from November 16 – 19. Thursday- Saturday evening performances are $20 and the Sunday matinee is Pay What You Can.
